Postgraduate research scholarships

Sydney Medical School and the Medical Foundation offer several scholarships to Australian and New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of Australia who enrol full-time in research higher degrees within the Sydney Medical School. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and any other criteria stipulated for individual scholarships. Not all scholarships are offered in any one year.

Albert S Mckern Research Scholarship

Established in 2009 by a bequest from Dr A S McKern to facilitate research into the cause, prevention and treatment of mental and physical pain and distress during pregnancy, labour and puerperium.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a graduate of the University of Sydney, Australia or the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, or Yale University, USA
  • Must be enrolled on a full time research degree (or have an offer to commence full time research in 2010) within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sydney
  • Must undertake research related to the cause, prevention and treatment of mental and physical pain and distress during pregnancy, labour and puerperium

Value: $45,000 (tax-exempt) per annum

Anthony Pierre Balthasar Scholarship in Anaesthetics

Eligibility:

  • must be undertaking research into anaesthesia for medical purposes
  • Australian and New Zealand citizen or permanent resident of Australia
  • have an offer to enrol fulltime in a MPhil or PhD at the Sydney Medical School

Value: stipend at the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) rate

Dorothy Blanche Chandler Scholarship

Established in 2003 by a bequest from Bruce Veness Chandler in honour of his mother, Dorothy Blanche Chandler. The purpose of the bequest was to provide a fund to study any aspect of rheumatoid arthritis and associated conditions.

Eligibility:

  • undertake research in any aspect of rheumatoid arthritis and associated conditions
  • Australian and New Zealand citizen or permanent resident of Australia or international students
  • have an offer to enrol fulltime in a MPhil or PhD at the Sydney Medical School

Enid Ng Fellowship in Haematology

Established in 2009 by a gift from Professor Alan BP Ng and Mrs Enid Ng, the Fellowship is to suppor the Alan Ng Professor of Haematology and the Department of Haematology at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must have been accepted into the Joint Specialist Advisory Committee JSAC training scheme in Haematology of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, or single discipline Haematology stream of either college.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an interest in Myeloma or related disorders.
  • Australian and New Zealand citizen or permanent resident of Australia.
  • have an offer to enrol fulltime in a MPhil or PhD at the Sydney Medical School

The letter must contain the applicant’s name, contact details, appropriately certified academic transcripts for all degrees and proof of acceptance into the Joint Specialist Advisory Committee JSAC training scheme in Haematology of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, or single discipline Haematology stream of either college. Proof of change of name is also necessary if any transcript is not in the applicant’s current name. In addition, an application to undertake a higher degree by research together with research proposal in a relevant area must be submitted to the Student Administration Unit for the Faculties of Dentistry, Medicine and Pharmacy by the closing date for the scholarship.

Elizabeth and Henry Hamilton-Browne Scholarship

The Elizabeth and Henry Hamilton-Browne Scholarship was established in 2007 to support research in medicine. It was the donors’ wish that female students in particular be supported.

  • preference will be given to female students
  • Australian and New Zealand citizen or permanent resident of Australia
  • have an offer to enrol fulltime in a MPhil or PhD at the Sydney Medical School

Established in 1964 by a gift of £23,000 from Dr Francis Patrick Christopher Claffy, first Director of the Department of Ophthalmology and Eye Health, in memory of his parents.

John Brooke Moore Research Scholarship in Surgery

Established in 1979 from a bequest by Moira Brooke Moore to establish a postgraduate scholarship in surgery to the memory of her father Dr John Brooke Moore, who practised surgery for many years in Bathurst, NSW.

  • must be graduates of the University of Sydney
  • Australian and New Zealand citizen or permanent resident of Australia
  • expected to enrol fulltime in a Master of Surgery (by research) or PhD at the Sydney Medical School

John Loewenthal Scholarship

Established in 2008 by a gift from Professor John Wong to establish a postgraduate scholarship in surgery in memory of Professor Sir John Loewenthal.

Eligibility:

The Medical Foundation Scholarship is a prestigious award funded by the Medical Foundation to support a person of outstanding research ability to undertake a full-time PhD in any area of research at the Sydney Medical School.

  • Applicants must demonstrate evidence of outstanding research ability and experience in a relevant field, reflecting the prestigious nature of this award.
  • Australian and New Zealand citizen or permanent resident of Australia
  • have an offer to enrol fulltime in a MPhil or PhD at the Sydney Medical School

Medical Foundation/Bluesand Foundation Scholarship for Alzheimer’s Disease Research

Through the support of the Medical Foundation and The Bluesand Foundation, the Sydney Medical School is offering a scholarship towards a higher degree by research for a suitably qualified candidate undertaking research in the area of Alzheimer’s disease.

Eligibility:

  • have the equivalent of an Australian Bachelor degree
  • be either Australian citizens or permanent residents, or citizens of New Zealand
  • be accepted into a higher degree by research in the area of Alzheimer's disease
  • preference will be given to the applicant who can provide evidence of significant research potential as demonstrated by, for example, research publications

Value: $20,000 for 1 year with the opportunity to apply for funds for the second year. It is expected that applicants will seek funds to complete their research project in subsequent year(s).

Medical Foundation/Meniere's Research Fund Scholarship

Through the support of the Medical Foundation and The Meniere’s Research Fund, Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney is offering a scholarship towards a doctorate of philosophy for a suitably qualified candidate undertaking research in the area of Meniere’s Disease.

Eligibility:

  • have the equivalent of an Australian Bachelor degree with Honours
  • be either Australian or New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents
  • be accepted into a PhD in the area of Meniere's disease
  • preference will be given to the applicant who can provide evidence of significant research potential as demonstrated by, for example, research publications

Value: $22,000 for 1 year with the opportunity to apply for funds for the second and third year. It is expected that applicants will seek funds to complete their research project in subsequent years.

The Muriel and Walter Lumley Research Scholarship was established in 2007 to support research in medicine, particularly in gynaecology.

Myee Codrington Scholarship in Microsurgery

The Myee Codrington Scholarship was established in 2006 to support research into the advancement of the use of microsurgery in clinical medicine. The project is funded by the Myee Codrington Medical Foundation and the Microsearch Foundation of Australia.

Eligibility:

  • be an Australian citizen, a New Zealand citizen or an Australian permanent resident
  • have a medical qualification from an Australian university or other recognised institution
  • be enrolled in, or intending to enrol in, basic surgical training as approved by recognised institutions
  • be enrolled in 2010 for a full-time Master of Surgery (by research) or a PhD in the Discipline of Surgery undertaking a research project in the field of transplantation biology, which would include microsurgical training and commit at least 4 days per week to research

Value: $35,000 per annum. Up to an additional $20,000 per annum may be available for research related consumables.

Phillip Jacoby Scholarship in Alzheimer’s Dementia Research

The Phillip Jacoby Scholarship in Alzheimer’s Dementia Research was established in 2007 following a gift by the family of the late Phillip Jacoby to support research within the University of Sydney.

  • research into Alzheimer's dementia, with a preference given to applicants who have a particular focus on the role genetics plays in Alzheimer’s dementia

Reginald Maney Lake and Amy Laura Bonamy Scholarship

The Reginald Maney Lake Scholarship was first established in 1926 to support full-time research in pathology. It is offered in conjunction with the Amy Laura Bonamy Scholarship, which was first established in 1948 by Mrs NMB Cowburn.
