Merit Scholarships
NUMBER OF SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE
In 2008, for 2009 entry, one or more 4-year scholarships of $5,000 per annum will be offered, subject only to the awardees maintaining satisfactory progress. In addition, at least two students will be offered 'start-up' scholarships of $5,000 for the first year only.

PROCESS
Prospective students will be notified of the opportunity to apply for these scholarships in November when places are offered.
All scholarship applications will be submitted to and handled by the University Scholarships Office.
The top 20 scholarship students who will be chosen according to their ranking in the USydMP selection procedure will have their portfolio and essay applications short-listed for assessment.
A panel of no more than four people will individually assess the portfolio and essay applications according to agreed criteria and then come together to make a final decision. The selection panel will be drawn from:
- Sub-Dean (International) or nominee
- Chair of the Admissions Committee or nominee
- Chair of PPD or nominee
- One other member of the Admissions Committee
- One member of research committee or nominee
The panel will recommend the award of scholarships to the Dean.
Commonwealth funded scholarships
The Commonwealth Learning Scholarships scheme are funded by the Commonwealth government and open to new and continuing students at the University. There are two types of Commonwealth Learning Scholarship:
- Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships (CECS) to assist with general education costs (indexed annually, worth $2162 per year in 2008) for up to four years; and
- Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS) to assist students from rural and remote areas with accommodation costs (worth $4324 per year in 2008) for up to four years.
The Commonwealth Learning Scholarships are tax-free and do not affect Centrelink payments you may be receiving.

Rural Australia Medical Undergraduate Scholarships (RAMUS)
Scholarships worth around $10,000 annually will be awarded to more than 180 students across Australia, with funds payable in each year of the medical course. Eligible applicants will be ranked according to rural experience and financial need. A financial test will apply. The scholarships are exempt from income tax under the Income Tax Assessment Act.

Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship Scheme (MRBSS)
The Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship Scheme (MRBSS) is part of the Australian Commonwealth Government’s Rural Health Strategy that includes an integrated range of initiatives to deliver more doctors and better health services to rural and regional communities.
The scholarships are attached to 100 new places in medical schools that are offered annually to both graduate and undergraduate entry students.
Each scholarship provides over $23,000 per year, indexed annually and currently tax free, during the course of study.
In return, scholars will agree to work for six years in a rural or remote area once they have qualified as either a general practitioner or specialist.

Australian Defence Force - Graduate Medical Sponsorship
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) offers the Graduate Medical Scheme which allows persons who already hold an appropriate degree qualification (ie acceptable to the respective Medical Faculty) to be sponsored to qualify as a medical practitioner and then serve in the Australian Defence Force as a Medical Officer.
Successful applicants undertake a four year degree course at one of the Australian universities offering the graduate medical program. This is followed by two years residency (internship and RMO1 year) to be completed at a teaching hospital. It is the responsibility of the applicant to seek acceptance into graduate medical studies at the university of their choice. This includes sitting the Graduate Australian Medical Schools Admission Test.
