Honours in Sydney Medical School for non-MBBS students

There are several types of honours degrees. The type referred to on this page constitutes an additional year of full-time study during which the student conducts a research program and writes a thesis under the supervision of a member of academic staff. There may be a component of coursework as well.


Who can apply?
If you are a current undergraduate student of, or have graduated within the last two years with a bachelor’s degree from, the faculties of Arts (Bachelor of Liberal Studies only), Health Sciences or Science, you may be eligible to enrol in an additional honours year with Sydney Medical School – the perfect start to a medical research career. This applies to students and graduates of all Australian universities.

Honours programs are available in the following disciplines:

  • Anatomy and Histology
  • Biomedical Science
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Pathology
  • Pharmacology
  • Physiology

In addition to the many projects that these disciplines offer directly, there are many collaborative projects hosted by Sydney Medical School's hospital-based clinical schools and associated research institutes.

Prior to applying for an honours project applicants should consult Sydney Medical School about available supervisors and projects by sending an email outlining their interests to .

Sydney Medical School Science Honours Scholarship
Merit-based honours scholarships will be available in 2009 to students who undertake their honours project within a discipline or school of Sydney Medical School. Students may commence in either semester.

The SCIWAM will be used to determine the level of scholarship awarded:

  • a student with a SCIWAM of 75 to 79.99 will receive a scholarship of $1,500
  • a student with a SCIWAM of 80 or greater will receive a scholarship of $3,000

Note: Students who are awarded a University Honours Scholarship, of equal or greater value than a Sydney Medical School Honours Scholarship, will not be eligible to receive a Sydney Medical School Honours Scholarship. Students who have a SCIWAM of 80 or greater must apply for a University Honours Scholarship.
