Westmead Millennium Institute for Medical Research

Westmead Millennium Institute (WMI) is located at the Westmead Hospital campus, and with over 300 researchers is one of the largest medical research centres in Australia. Formed in 1997, WMI has rapidly expanded to become a pioneer in basic and clinical medical research over five significant health priorities.

Our "bench to bedside" research philosophy is founded on the translation of our basic medical research into successful clinical outcomes, better patient care and healthier communities.

  • Cancer & Leukaemia - Westmead Institute for Cancer Research, examining breast, ovarian and colon cancer, melanoma, leukaemia.
  • Hepatology & Metabolism - Storr Liver Unit investigating fatty liver disease, liver cancer, hepatitis, drug interaction and metabolism.
  • Infectious Disease - Centre for Virus Research investigating HIV/AIDS, herpes, influenza, shingles, CMV; Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology investigating fungal and bacterial infection, antibiotic resistance; Institute for Dental Research researching periodontal disease, oral microbiology.
  • Immunology - Institute for Immunology and Allergy Research researching multiple sclerosis, asthma, dermatitis, allergies, type 1 diabetes; Centre for Transplant and Renal Research researching islet and pancreatic transplantation, kidney regeneration and xenotransplantation.
  • Sensory Disorders - Centre for Vision Research researching myopia, macular degeneration and retinal diagnosis.

WMI possesses cutting edge research infrastructure including bioinformatics and proteomics, confocal and electron microscopy, DNA microarray and sequencing, flow cytometry and comprehensive animal and clinical research facilities. While the diseases we research are diverse, the techniques and expertise used within each group share the similar themes of cellular and molecular biology, and genetic epidemiology.
