Department of Endocrinology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital

The Department of Endocrinology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital is a multidisciplinary institute with research interests in diabetes mellitus, growth factors, fertility, obesity and cancer. Within these groups there are sections on insulin action, pathogenesis of diabetes and its complications, cancer and intermediary metabolism. The Institute has a strong academic base, pursuing research and teaching in medicine and the allied health professions. The research program extends from basic science to applied pathophysiology of endocrine disease and clinical endocrinology.

Ambulatory care centres have been established in diabetes, weight control, fertility and general endocrinology. An Endocrinology and Metabolism Investigation Unit with day beds, short stay and full in-patient endocrinology care is provided at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. This service is supported by the most comprehensive diagnostic endocrinology laboratory in Australia. Members play significant roles in professional societies, endocrinology and diabetes associations within Australia and internationally. The Institute is supported extensively by peer review granting bodies such as the NHMRC, with funding from Australia and overseas. It is closely affiliated with the Endocrinology and Diabetes Research Foundation of the University of Sydney.
