Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetes

The Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetes was established in 1987 and has a large clinical department of paediatric endocrinology and diabetes and a strong clinical research program.

Our Diabetes research includes:

  • The epidemiology of T1DM and T2DM in NSW and ACT
  • International prevention studies with ultimate aim of curing T1DM
  • The identification of risk factors for microvascular diabetes complications in adolescents - current research in progress is examining the genetics of diabetes complications
  • The application of emerging diabetes technologies to real world diabetes management, particularly insulin pump therapy and continuous glucose monitoring
  • Community based study of insulin resistance associated with obesity.

Bone Health Research and Clinical Studies include:

  • The effect of chronic disease on bone structure and density
  • The role of bisphosphonates in children with osteonecrosis
  • Cortisol deficiency in children with Hypopituitarism and its role in the paediatric intensive care setting.

The Institute maintains the national database for children receiving Growth Hormone, OZGROW, and participates in the national epidemiology database for children with diabetes.
