Kanematsu Laboratories

The Kanematsu Laboratories have now merged with the Institute of Haematology at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

The Kanematsu Memorial Institute of Pathology was the first medical institute in New South Wales and was opened in Sydney Hospital in 1933. Past members include Nobel Laureates Sir John Eccles (a past director) and Sir Bernard Katz. Renamed the Kanematsu Laboratories in 1982, it is now part of the Sydney Cancer Centre, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and is located in the Blackburn Building of the University of Sydney.
The Laboratories undertake research into leukaemia, lymphoma and other cancers based on a multidisciplinary approach of basic and clinical research to define how cellular growth and differentiation are regulated in normal cells and how these processes are altered in cancer cells. Specific interests of the various groups in the Laboratories include the regulation of molecular and cellular biology of leukaemia, the cellular and molecular biology of cancer invasion and metastasis, the role of DNA methylation in cancer and normal development, and clinical and translational research.
