Institute for Immunology and Allergy Research
The Institute for Immunology and Allergy Research (IIAR), based at Westmead Hospital, was established in 1995 to advance basic and clinical research in the fields of immunology and allergy with the long term aim of reducing the burden of illness due to immunological and allergic diseases. It has a particular focus on research with potential for the development of new approaches to diagnosis or treatment that may result in prevention or cure of these disorders.
Researchers at the Institute are interested in studying the immune system in health and disease at all stages of life.
Current interests include:
- Finding the genes responsible for autoimmune disease in multiple sclerosis, diabetes and other conditions and allergic disease
- Understanding how genes influence HIV infection and how HIV destroys immune function.
- Understanding the role of immune cells in allergic disease
- The molecular signals used within T-cells in normal function and disease
- The causes of immune deficiencies
- Causes of allergies
The Institute also sponsors “Wattle Week", a national programme at the start of spring each year aimed at increasing the understanding of allergies, their treatment and the importance of research.
