Heart Research Institute

Heart Research Institute logo

The Heart Research Institute is a research centre with an international reputation dedicated to preventing, diagnosing and curing heart disease, the world's number one killer.

Established in 1989 as an independent, world-class research institute, it is a centre for scientific research excellence with a focus on understanding the origins and mechanisms of the disease of blood vessels which ultimately causes heart disease and stroke.

While there are many causes of heart disease, the most significant is atherosclerosis (the thickening of blood vessels and build-up of fatty plaques within them). Atherosclerosis causes heart attack, angina, stroke and other diseases, which together claim over 50,000 lives in Australia per year - more than cancer, AIDS and motor accidents combined.

Mission
The Institute's Mission is to prevent death and suffering from heart disease through an understanding of the biological processes that cause atherosclerosis.

The Heart Research Institute's major targets are:

  • To develop a simple way of detecting atherosclerosis at an early stage before it leads to clinical problems.
  • To develop new treatments that can reverse existing disease.
  • To prevent individuals from developing atherosclerosis.
