Drug Health Services, SSWAHS
The Drug and Alcohol Service of Sydney South West Area Health Service (SSWAHS) provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient clinical services to the public. In addition, staff have a close involvement in university-based teaching and research and are involved in collaborative research in Sydney and internationally. This gives researchers the valuable combination of awareness of clinical needs, and access to both study participants and tools with which to address research questions.
The three major research areas are:
- Drug and alcohol medicine - the team, led by Associate Professor Paul Haber, investigates the pathogenesis and treatment of alcoholic liver and pancreatic disease, and Hepatitis C
- Research into public health aspects of drug and alcohol use - the team, led by Associate Professor Kate Conigrave investigates the epidemiology of alcohol use, early detection and treatment of hazardous alcohol use, and biological markers of alcohol use
- Evaluation of treatment outcomes - this team investigates the evaluation of aftercare in a residential setting and the impact of outpatient detoxification as well as the outcomes of pharmacological treatment for drug and alcohol dependence including methadone in community pharmacies, acamprosate and naltrexone for alcohol dependence, and buprenorphine in opioid detoxification.
