Centre for Values, Ethics and the Law in Medicine

The Centre for Values, Ethics and the Law in Medicine is an independent centre of the University of Sydney associated with the Faculty of Medicine.

The Centre was first established in 1995 by Australian philosopher, surgeon and poet, Emeritus Professor Miles Little and has since gained an international reputation. It is known for its innovative approach to research, education, consultation and community outreach activities. In each of these areas the Centre stimulates creative thought, dialogue and action by engaging different disciplinary perspectives including medicine and science, public health, philosophy, ethics and bioethics, sociology, social linguistics, psychology, history and law. The Centre provides advice and opinions on major bioethical issues beyond the scope of institutional ethics committees, such as euthanasia, genetic engineering, tissue retention and cloning. Much of this consultation is confidential, and the Centre has appropriate mechanisms to protect the privacy and confidentiality of the clientele. The Centre also provides a stimulating supportive intellectual environment for postgraduate study, especially for interdisciplinary research. It has a rapidly growing research program and is actively pursuing funding to support postgraduate students. Supervision is available for students undertaking PhD and Masters degrees by research as well as Honours in the University of Sydney Medical Program.
