NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre

The NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre is a leader in clinical trials research in Australia, coordinating its own and assisting others in conducting large-scale, multi-centre clinical trials. The Centre was established in October 1988 under the auspices of the University of Sydney and the National Health and Medical Research Council.

The Clinical Trials Centre plays a vital role in promoting evidence based medicine in Australia. This is achieved by:

  • undertaking large controlled trials of major public health importance
  • providing assistance and expert advice to other clinical trial investigators
  • reviewing evidence from randomised trials
  • developing methodologies and quality control programs
  • and promoting better clinical trials practice through educational programs

The Clinical Trials Centre works together with collaborative groups on specific projects and the final product of clinical research is due to the joint efforts of the investigative networks and contributions of all participating groups.

Areas of research

In addition to the conduct of many large multicentre randomised trials, currently in cancer and cardiovascular disease, the Trials Centre has varied research interests in a broad range of trial methodologies including:

  • Health outcome assessment in clinical trials including the incorporation of quality of life and economic outcomes into trials
  • Specialised methods of randomisation such as dynamic balancing
  • Strategies for increasing patient recruitment and compliance
  • Data management, data quality control and database design
  • Statistical methodology
  • Decision analyses based on clinical trial results
  • Meta-analyses and systematic reviews to assist with improvements in evidence-based health care
