Henry Langley Postdoctoral Fellowship

In 1988 the University of Sydney established a postdoctoral award for research into the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in accordance with the conditions of a bequest received from Mr Henry Langley in 1970. The Henry Langley Fellowship is available for postdoctoral research into rheumatoid arthritis in Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney and is awarded on the basis of academic merit and appropriateness of the proposed research on the recommendation of the Research Committee of Sydney Medical School. The Fellowship takes the form of a research-only appointment at a level commensurate with the Fellow’s qualifications and experience. The Fellowship may not be held concurrently with any other award from the University of Sydney. Qualifying recipients may be paid an appropriate clinical loading. The Fellowship also provides for a grant-in-aid of $5000 per annum for travel, consumables and equipment.

Conditions of Award
The object of the Henry Langley Postdoctoral Fellowship is to promote and encourage postdoctoral research into the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney.

The Fellowship is available to any applicant who holds the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, or who possesses equivalent standing as may be approved by the Research Committee of Sydney Medical School. The Fellowship may not be held concurrently with any other award from the University of Sydney.

The Fellowship is awarded by the Dean of Sydney Medical School on the recommendation of the Research Committee of the Medical School on the basis of academic merit and the appropriateness of the proposed research. Fellowships are tenable for a period of one year in the first instance and, subject to satisfactory progress, may be renewed for a second and third year. Fellowships may not be renewed beyond the third year and Fellows shall not be eligible for award of a second Henry Langley Fellowship on any subsequent occasion.

The successful applicant will be appointed at an appropriate level within the University of Sydney salary scale for Research Fellows. In addition, an appropriate clinical loading may be paid to eligible fellows. A grant-in-aid of $5000 per annum will be available to the successful applicant to cover items such as travel, consumables, technical assistance and equipment associated with the research project.

The Medical School reserves the right to not award the Fellowship should no applications of sufficient merit be received in any given year.

Rolf Edgar Lake Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Rolf Edgar Lake Postdoctoral Fellowship was established to encourage and promote postdoctoral research in Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney. Applicants must hold the degree of Doctor of Philosophy or equivalent. The Fellowship takes the form of a salaried appointment, calculated to be at the appropriate level for research fellows.

Conditions of Award
The Rolf Edgar Lake Postdoctoral Fellowship was established in 1978, and is awarded under the following conditions:

  1. The Fellowships shall be known as the Rolf Edgar Lake Postdoctoral Research Fellowships.
  2. The object of the Fellowships shall be to promote and encourage postdoctoral research in Sydney Medical School in the University of Sydney.
  3. The Fellowships shall be awarded by the Research Committee of Sydney Medical School on the basis of merit and the appropriateness of the proposed program. In selecting fellows, preference will be given to applicants who have already embarked on research careers, and for whom the award of the fellowship can be seen as a significant contribution to the further development of their careers. Therefore, while senior scientists are not precluded from applying, preference will be given to scientists at an earlier stage of their careers i.e. within five years of award of their PhD.
  4. A Fellowship may only be awarded to an applicant who holds the degree of Doctor of Philosophy or who possess such equivalent standing as may be approved by the Research Committee of Sydney Medical School.
  5. The Fellowships are tenable for one year in the first instance but, subject to satisfactory progress, may be renewed for a second and third year. Fellowships may not be renewed beyond the third year, and Fellowship holders shall not be eligible for award of a new Rolf Edgar Lake Postdoctoral Fellowship on any subsequent occasion.
  6. The successful applicant will be appointed at an appropriate level within the University of Sydney salary scale for Research Fellows. Qualifying recipients shall also be paid an appropriate clinical loading. The Fellowships may not be held concurrently with any other award from the University of Sydney.
  7. Subject to verification of the expenses actually incurred, a Fellowship may be accompanied by a grant-in-aid up to $15,000 to cover approved items such as technical assistance, equipment and consumables.
