Dr Ryan is the Director of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at Sydney's Westmead Hospital and an Honorary Associate of the Centre for Values, Ethics and the Law in Medicine.

Though his work is primarily clinical, he maintains an active research programme and an interest in medical education. He is Chair of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists Committee for Advanced Training in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry and also serves on the College Ethics Committee.
