Faculty of Medicine graduate, Dr Terence Poon, has won Cure Cancer Australia’s clinical award for Young Researcher of the Year for 2005. The awards from Cure Cancer Australia recognise brilliant cancer researchers in the early stages of their career.

Dr Poon undertook a PhD with Professor Ross Barnetson, at the Faculty of Medicine Central Clinical School completing in 2004. Dr Poon is currently completing his training as a dermatologist at the Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital.

Cure Cancer Australia says Dr Poon’s work has broken new ground with respect to skin cancer prevention as it has shown conclusively the importance of protection from UVA in human skin cancer.

Professor Martin Tattersall, Professor of Oncology at the University of Sydney and Chairman of the Medical Grants Advisory Committee said: "Dr Terence Poon and the other young researchers who were recognised have already made contributions to science which are altering practices throughout the world and which ultimately save many lives. Our vision of a world without cancer is in their hands."
