Outgoing University of Sydney elective students to Weill Cornell Medical College (Dec 2007-Feb 2008)

Weill Cornell Medical College

Under the agreement between the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney and the Office of Global Health Education, Weill-Cornell Medical College, two University of Sydney students may be nominated for a full-fee waiver and two for a half-fee waiver for 8-12 weeks clinical or research placement at Weill-Cornell. In 2008 the half-fee waiver is equivalent to US$1,000 per 4 weeks. (ie Full fees are US$2000 per 4 weeks).

The next round of placements for December 2008-February 2009 will be advertised early in 2008 via a bulletin. It will be open to all students regardless of clinical school and country of origin. Public Health is a special feature of this particular exchange program and both full-fee waiver students must complete a 2 week public health clerkship (Health Care Policy) which will be part of the placement. Others may take this clerkship by special request. For the remainder of the placement, students can nominate a sub-specialty area of particular relevance to their own career interests and the Office of Global Health Education will do their best to try and facilitate this.

University of Sydney students should not contact Weill Cornell Medical College directly. General information about Weill Cornell Medical College can be found at on their website.

Travel and living expenses must be borne by students, although some subsidised accommodation may be available.

Incoming Weill Cornell Medical College students to University of Sydney in 2008

Broken Hill Town Centre

The Weill Cornell Office of Global Health Education each year nominates two students to undertake an elective placement for at the University of Sydney. Since public health is a special feature of this particular exchange agreement, all incoming students will spend four weeks on clinical placement, two weeks in a public health placement and two weeks at our University Department of Rural Health in Broken Hill. Broken Hill is approximately 1200kms from Sydney and students should appreciate that the town is in an outback setting where the climate can be quite harsh & the conditions quite tough at times. Depending on capacity at the time of the placements, students may have the opportunity to visit some remote indigenous communities, remote community health clinics and Royal Flying Doctor Service visits. The University Department of Rural Health has a strong local student teaching load and priority will be given to local students for these attachments. Cultural awareness training with an indigenous academic staff member is mandatory.

For the remainder of the placements, students should nominate clinical subspecialty areas of special interest & we will do our best to accommodate individual preference.

Students interested in a particular sub-speciality should indicate this in their application through the Office of Global Health Education and every attempt will be made to accommodate individual preferences. If a particular hospital or location is preferred this should be indicated and we will try to find a placement to suit your needs. It is suggested that interested students from Cornell should browse through the following websites to gain some idea of possible elective placement opportunities.
