Concord Clinical School
Location
The Concord Clinical School is located on the grounds of Concord General Repatriation Hospital in the suburb of Concord on a peninsula between Brays Bay and Yaralla Bay on the Parramatta River.
Getting there
Concord Hospital is situated on the Parramatta River approximately 15km west of the Sydney Central Business District. The hospital can be accessed by train from the city and bus from Strathfield train station (bus no. 458 or 461 in the direction of Ryde) or Rhodes train station (458 in the direction of Burwood). It is also possible to walk through the park (12 minutes) from Rhodes train station. Parking is available for a VERY cheap price for students (equivalent to $1/week). There is more information available on transport at www.sydneytransport.net.au.
Student facilities
Concord Clinical School has a common room for students with pool table, darts, ping pong, TV with VCR and kitchen amenties (fridge, hot water etc.). Every Thursday, a market fair is held on the hospital grounds offering a variety of foods from Nepalese to Turkish. A large library is also available for students wishing somewhere to study and the Clinical labs are usually open for students to practice their skills. There is a dedicated computer room for students to surf the web, print or word process.
A list of private home-stay accommodation near the hospital is available upon request. The University of Sydney also has an accommodation service at the main campus. The accommodation service assists students to find off-campus accommodation by maintaining an extensive database of suitable accommodation in various areas but primarily close to the University or within easy access via public transport www.usyd.edu.au/su/accom/welcome.html. Keep in mind that during 1st and 2nd year, living near hospital is not necessary, but may be more useful in 3rd and 4th year, depending on your mode of transport and distance from Concord.
Our strengths
The Concord Clinical School is the perfect choice for any medical student. Clinical School Staff are friendly and helpful and always willing to take the time to discuss any issues you have or just partake in a friendly chat. Organising visits to the operating theatres, Emergency Department or other departments can easily be arranged by talking to the Clinical Skills co-ordinator. Concord has more SCORPIO sessions than any other Clinical School. As a Repatriation hospital, it is often easier to find patients willing to talk to students in order to hone their history-taking skills or practice an examination skill. Despite this, Concord services people of all ages, not just elderly patients. Concord has just completed a renovation of the main building, incorporating new wards and reducing the “spread” of the old hospital grounds. Parking is cheap for students and always easy to find. Events are also often held with the help of the Concord Medical Students Society (BBQs, parties, etc.). There are numerous food outlets around the hospital and Thursdays boast a market fair on the hospital grounds with a colourful mix of affordable and exotic foods. Concord is an excellent choice for any medical student.
