Local student offers, quotas, deferral & transfer
Offers
Offers of places are made by the Dean of Sydney Medical School to those applicants who are considered to be most suitable, progressing through the suitable categories until all places have been offered.
Applicants are required to meet or exceed a minimum MMI score which will be determined by the Admissions Committee. Applicants will then be ranked on the basis of their GAMSAT performance (50%) and their MMI performance (50%). This will generate a single ranked list of applicants. Offers will be made in sequence commencing with the applicant with the highest ranked score. Should it arise that applicants ranked equally need to be separated, the Overall GAMSAT scores will be used.
The applicants most highly ranked will be offered places first according to their preferences (applicants are required to number their preferences from the options detailed in the Quotas section, below). If a particular type of place is no longer available (i.e. all places have been offered to applicants ranked more highly), applicants will be offered their next preferred available place.
This process will be unchanged in 2009 for 2010 entry.
Firm offers are only made to applicants who are already graduates. Provisional offers are made to applicants who have not completed the final year of their Bachelor degree at the time of interview. The provisional offer lapses if the applicant fails to achieve a GPA of 5.5 or above on completion of the degree. An original academic transcript of the completed degree must be submitted to Sydney Medical School as soon as it is available and no later than 5 January of the year in which the applicant intends to commence the Medical Program. Where the transcript does not state that the degree has been conferred, an award letter issued by your Faculty or University, showing the scheduled date of graduation ceremony, must also be provided by the due date. Offers are normally made in early November.
Successful applicants are given a firm date by which to accept the offer of a place; offers not accepted in writing by that date lapse.
No applicant will be admitted to a graduate-entry medical program with advanced standing and exemptions from participating in part of the program will not be offered. Notwithstanding the above, approval for exemptions from the non clinical components of Stages 1 and 2 of the Medical Program will be considered for applicants who have completed the requirements of the Bachelor of Dentistry at the University of Sydney.
Applicants must take responsibility for establishing their entitlement to Austudy or Abstudy.
Applicants who are not offered a place will have their applications forwarded to their lower preference schools, where they will be considered for an offer. Sydney Medical School will also consider applicants rejected by a higher preference medical school post-interview.
Quotas
| Type of place offered in 2009 | Quota |
|---|---|
| Commonwealth supported places (formerly HECS) | 163* |
| **Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship Scheme Places (MRBSS) | 9 |
| **Bonded Medical Places (BMP) | 57 |
| Total | 229 |
The information included here is correct as of 16 September 2009.
*The number includes up to 15 places reserved for combined medicine program students.
NOTE: The numbers of places may change. Any new information will be posted here when available.
(See Fees and Scholarships for further information.)
Please note that identical admission criteria apply to all places.
**Only Australian citizens or permanent residents are eligible for MRBSS places and BMPs. New Zealand citizens must be Australian permanent residents to be eligible to apply. For details, please visit the Website: Department of Health and Ageing - MRB Scholarships &
Department of Health and Ageing - BMP Scheme.
Applicants are required to number their offer preferences when they make an interview booking on line.
Please note that Medical Rural Bonded Scholarship Scheme places and Bonded Medical Places are additional to the University’s standard Commonwealth supported places.
If an applicant nominates either MRBSS or BMP and decides not to take up the offer, the University will not be in a position to provide the applicant with a place in the program. If a student accepts a MRBSS or BMP, he/she is unable to transfer to any other type of place.
Please note that withdrawal from a MRBSS or BMP at any time prior to completion of the Medical Program will mean that the MRBSS or BMP will be terminated and enrolment in the Medical Program will be cancelled.
Deferral
(Subject to final approval.)
Deferral of enrolment following offer of a place in the Medical Program is discouraged except in the following circumstances:
- Progression to Honours, Masters or a PhD. Before deferral is granted supporting documentation must be provided giving details of enrolment, and written support from proposed supervisor(s) as to the nature of the program. Such deferral is to encourage applicants to undertake research in their chosen field.
- Deferral will not normally be granted for completion of "professional years" except where awarding of a Bachelors degree is dependent upon such completion.
- Otherwise deferral of an offer will only be considered under exceptional circumstances which could not have been foreseen at the time of application.
- Requests for deferral must be in writing and must be received by 30 November. Deferral can only be granted one year at a time and will not be expected to last longer than two years. Requests will be considered by the Admissions Committee and the Dean of Sydney Medical School.
Applicants who hold a deferred place cannot reapply to a different school the following year. An applicant, who holds a deferred place which they do not wish to take up, must notify the school concerned prior to the closing date for applications for the following year. They may then apply to another school.
Transfer
(Subject to final approval.)
Transfer of enrolment between medical schools is not possible except in exceptional circumstances.
Transfer will not be considered if an applicant has applied to the Medical Program but has been rejected.
Applicants for transfer must have met the requirements for admission to the Medical Program that were in place at the time of admission to the prior medical school.
Applicants for transfer must complete at least 50 per cent of the Medical Program (ie transfers will only be considered for entry into Stage 1, Stage 2 or the start of Stage 3).
Matters that the Dean will consider in reviewing an application for transfer include:
- The circumstances leading to a request for transfer;
- Whether the medical program curriculum undertaken by the applicant at the prior institution is comparable to the Sydney Medical Program, as determined by the Sydney Medical School;
- The academic performance of the applicant in the prior medical school; and
- The availability of places in the year applied for.
- It may be that applicants will be required to undertake a barrier examination that permits entry into the appropriate year.
Applicants will be required to release all documents relevant to their current course.
Please complete a Transfer Application Form and return it along with the required documents to the following address:
