Commonwealth supported places (formerly HECS)

A Commonwealth supported place is a higher education place for which the Commonwealth makes a contribution towards the cost of education. The Australian Government allocates a number of Commonwealth supported places to eligible higher education providers each year including the University of Sydney. Commonwealth supported students are required to contribute to the cost of their education through a student contribution. In 2009 the contribution for medicine is $8,677.

Information for commonwealth supported students

All Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and holders of a permanent visa are allocated a Student Learning Entitlement (SLE). The SLE is made up of ordinary, any additional, and lifelong SLE. The SLE will be used as a student undertakes study as a Commonwealth supported student. Any study undertaken before 2005 does not affect the SLE.

In 2008 all eligible students are allocated 'ordinary' SLE to the value of 7 EFTSL (equivalent full-time student load) which entitles them to 7 years of equivalent full-time study as a Commonwealth supported student. It is important for students to monitor how much SLE they have used, particularly if they decide during their course to commence a different course of study.
