Scholarships for international students

Scholarships of the following type are available to international applicants:

Scholarships For Citizens Of Timor Leste

Sydney Medical School will provide two scholarships for citizens of Timor Leste, regardless of residency, to join the Medical Program.

Scholarships will cover the international student fees payable, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) insurance and a living allowance of $25,000 per annum indexed according to increases in the cost of living.

Subject to scholarship holders making satisfactory progress to proceed to the next academic year the Medical School’s scholarship support will continue automatically. Should a scholarship holder not meet the Medical School’s requirements to proceed to a subsequent academic year, the Medical School will consider providing scholarship support for one additional year only, i.e. scholarship support will be available for a maximum of five years.

The Scholarships were initially offered as a pilot scheme for admission to Stage 1 of the Medical Program in 2007 for 2008 entry and its success will be reviewed jointly in 2010.

All applicants must complete an application to the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). For further details, please visit the GAMSAT website at: www.gamsat.acer.edu.au

International Student Merit Scholarships

NUMBER OF SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

In 2009, for 2010 entry, up to four 4-year scholarships of AUD$10,000 per annum will be offered, subject only to the awardees maintaining satisfactory progress.

It is Medical School policy that International Merit Scholarships should not only encourage excellent candidates to study in the Medical Program but should also promote diversity within the international student cohort. At least one International Merit Scholarship will be awarded in each of four regions:

  • Asia-Pacific
  • Africa-Middle East
  • Americas
  • Europe

Any remaining scholarship funds may be distributed as either additional scholarships (as above) or as a ‘start-up’ scholarship of a fixed sum (i.e. AUD$5,000).

APPLICATION FORM

The application form is available for download.

Please note that an application for the international merit scholarship does not constitute an application for the Medical Program.

Only those students who are offered a place in the Medical Program for 2010 entry will be eligible to apply.

PROCESS

Prospective students will be notified of the opportunity to apply for these scholarships when the offers of places have been made.

Up to 5 scholarship applicants per region will be have their applications short-listed for assessment. These applicants will be chosen according to their ranking in the Medical Program selection procedure. Additional applications may be assessed if additional funds are to be distributed.

Applicants who hold dual citizenships may nominate one geographical region only in which to be considered. (Those who hold dual Australian citizenship must apply as local applicants).

A panel of no more than four people will individually assess the applications according to agreed criteria and then come together to make a final decision. The selection panel will be drawn from:

  • Sub-Dean (International) or nominee
  • Chair of the Admissions Committee or nominee
  • Chair of the Personal & Professional Development Theme or nominee
  • One other member of the Admissions Committee
  • One member of the Research Committee or nominee

The panel will recommend the award of scholarships to the Dean.
