Undergraduate/Postgraduate Coursework Teaching by Research-Only Staff in the Faculty of Medicine
At its meeting on 14 February 2008 the Dean's Advisory Committee resolved that research-only staff funded either fully or partially by Faculty recurrent funds be normally required to provide a minimum of 20 hours of face-to-face undergraduate or postgraduate coursework teaching per annum.
Advice received from HR indicates that Schedule 2 - Academic Classifications of the Academic Staff Agreement 2006-2008 makes provision for this requirement. As a consequence, research-only staff in the Faculty of Medicine paid either fully or partially (e.g. NHMRC Fellows receiving Faculty funded salary supplementation) from 00000 accounts may be required by their Head of School/Head of Discipline to undertake a minimum of 20 hours of undergraduate or postgraduate coursework teaching per year. Hiring managers are asked to ensure that this requirement is included in the advertisements for new positions. Employment contracts for new research-only staff will be reflecting this requirement.
This requirement does not apply to entirely externally funded research-only staff. Exemptions may also be made for staff with major service roles. It is also recognised that there may be limited opportunity for undergraduate or postgraduate coursework teaching in some Schools and Disciplines.
