Clinical academic titles

This document must be read in conjunction with the University’s policy: Academic Titles: Conferring of All Academic Titles.

Clinical academic titles may be conferred by the University primarily on salaried staff and visiting staff of teaching hospitals and on other health professionals who meet teaching needs, on a regular basis, which the University may not otherwise satisfy and who may also contribute to the University’s research activities. The conferring of a clinical academic title does not establish an employment relationship with the University, nor alter any employment relationship that currently exists, nor does it entitle the recipient to any salary payments nor alter any salary payments that currently exist.

All persons on whom clinical academic titles are conferred on the basis of their contribution to the activities of the Faculty of Medicine become members of the Faculty of Medicine and members of the appropriate School of the Faculty. They are then able to supervise postgraduate students in their own right and to participate as fully as they wish in the academic affairs of their School. They are entitled to University of Sydney library access and an ISP and @med email account. They are expected to teach and examine for the Faculty as required by the Head of the relevant School at no cost to the University and may also be expected to make a contribution to research and scholarship. They are encouraged to submit their applications for research support to external agencies through the University’s Research Office whenever they are the principal investigator on the application and, in doing so, become eligible for Research Infrastructure Block Grant support and certain University funding schemes as determined by University policy. They are required to acknowledge the University of Sydney in the by-line of any publications resulting from research undertaken in their capacity as a University of Sydney affiliate.

PLEASE NOTE: In the case of nominations of existing title holders (level A - D) for a more senior title, the Head of School should particularly comment on the nominee’s achievements since having been awarded a clinical academic title at his/her current level.

Nominations may be considered for awards at the level of:

  • Clinical Associate Lecturer (Level A)
  • Clinical Lecturer (Level B)
  • Clinical Senior Lecturer (Level C)
