Professor J A Young Medal - Call for nominations

The Professor J A Young Medal was established by the Faculty of Medicine following the death of Emeritus Professor J A Young AO, FAA FRACP on 10 February 2004.

Professor Young was appointed Professor of Physiology in 1976 and was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1989 until 1994 when he was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the College of Health Sciences. For almost 40 years Professor Young was one of the leading figures in physiology in Australia. The importance of his contributions to scientific knowledge were recognised by election to Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Sciences, where he rose to be Vice-President and Secretary (Biological) and by the award of the prestigious Research Professorship of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung. Professor Young also served as President of the University staff union, member of Senate and Deputy Chair of the Academic Board.

Provided there is candidate of sufficient merit, the Medal is awarded biennially by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine to the non-professorial member of Faculty who best embodies Professor Young's ideals of excellence in research coupled with exemplary service to the Faculty of Medicine, the University and the community at large. Nominations (including self-nominations) may be submitted through any two heads of Department/School of the University. Nominations are considered by a committee comprising two members of the Faculty of Medicine and one member from outside the Faculty but from within the University appointed by the Dean.

The Medal is accompanied by a $5,000 prize. This may be paid either to the recipient or to the recipient's School for the puchase of consumables and/or equipment.

Nominations are now being invited for the 2008 Medal. Nominations must comprise the nominee's curriculum vitae (including attachments, e.g. list of publications) and a statement (up to four pages) on how the nominee fits the criteria. This statement must be endorsed by the two Heads of Department/School. Nominations must be submitted to

Please note that Associate Professors are considered to be non-professorial and are therefore eligible to self-nominate or be nominated.
