School of Rural Health

The School of Rural Health, initially known as the Dubbo Clinical School, was established in 2001 as the Rural Clinical School for the University of Sydney. In the 2000 Federal budget's Regional Health Strategy, funding was provided for the establishment of nine rural clinical schools across Australia.
Its major campuses are located at Dubbo and Orange and there are smaller campuses at Bathurst and Broken Hill.
The School is focused on providing teaching for medical students in rural communities, and has a commitment to establish and maintain academic resources in rural and remote NSW.
It provides leadership and strategic direction for the Faculty's rural health initiative and has links to communities, industry, health services, professional organizations and other health science faculties involved in rural education.
The mission of the School of Rural Health is to contribute to the improved recruitment and retention of doctors in rural and remote Australia by providing medical education in rural regions.
This will be achieved by offering accessible and flexible medical training programs of high quality and relevance, by conducting research to improve rural health and practice, by engaging effectively in regional governmental professional and community consultations and initiatives, and by assisting in the development of rural health policies.
Specific objectives of the School are to:
- increase opportunities for medical students to complete training in rural communities;
- promote a positive attitude to rural lifestyle and practice among medical students;
- promote and support rural teachers and teaching;
- develop research capacity in rural areas;
- undertake research to improve the health of rural residents, and rural health practice.
The establishment of a research entity to attract infrastructure funding and develop a common research agenda will further enhance the School's reputation and contribution.
The School provides professional and collegiate support for academic and general staff of the School and ensures there is a critical mass of such staff across the School's campuses to ensure sustainability of the educational, research and development programs.
