Northern Clinical School

Overview

The Northern Clinical School, centred at the Royal North Shore Hospital, encompasses most of the health facilities in the lower sector of the Northern Sydney and Central Coast Area Health Service, serving a population of nearly one million people. The Northern Clinical School brings together a large group of expert medical teachers and a range of excellent clinical training facilities to create outstanding opportunities for clinical education. There are also leading research institutes based within the School, providing opportunities for students to participate in cutting edge research programs.

Royal North Shore Hospital is an acute general teaching referral hospital (660 beds). Every medical speciality is represented, and several clinical units provide state-wide referral services. Specialised clinical teaching centres have been established at the Hospital including the Sydney Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre and the Pam McLean Cancer Communications Centre.

The Clinical School also encompasses four public Metropolitan Hospitals - Manly, Mona Vale, Ryde, and Hornsby Ku-ring-gai - each of which is closely associated with its surrounding community and has a busy Emergency Department. Also included in the School is the Royal Rehabilitation Centre Sydney, where the Rehabilitation Studies Unit and the Centre for Developmental Disability Studies are based. Three private hospitals, The Mater Hospital (Crows Nest), North Shore Private Hospital (St Leonards) and the Sydney Adventist Hospital (Wahroonga) increase the exposure of students to a range of clinical practice settings. Students also have the opportunity of spending time in the Northern Rivers region during Stage 3, including Lismore Base, Grafton and Murwillumbah Hospitals.

Medical research is another major activity of the Clinical School. Around 100 postgraduate research students undertake their training towards a higher degree in the facilities of the School, under the supervision of scientists and clinicians conducting research programs in a wide variety of fields. Basic laboratory-based research is conducted in the Kolling Building on the Royal North Shore Hospital campus, mostly within the Kolling Institute of Medical Research, the oldest research institute in the state of New South Wales. Clinical and epidemiological research is conducted elsewhere on the Hospital campus and at other sites within the clinical network of the School. There is an active Postgraduate Research Students Society, and regular research seminars are conducted throughout the year.

Student facilities at the Royal North Shore Hospital currently include the Douglas Piper Library where light airy desk areas, wireless access to University of Sydney and Area Health Service networks, meeting rooms and printing and photocopy facilities make it a joy in which to study and research. This level houses the Medical Illustrations Department and the support staff for audio-visual and information technology services. The student common room area on this floor gives students 24 hour access to a computer suite/study area, kitchen and comfortable seating facilities, and lockers.

Although there is no accommodation available on-site, accommodation is available in hostels and home-stays in the vicinity of the Hospital, and at the other hospitals within the Area.

The Northern Clinical School is located 6 km from the centre of Sydney and is well served by public transport - St Leonards Station and bus stops are located on the Pacific Highway at the entrance to the Royal North Shore Hospital. All other Northern Clinical School hospitals are well served by bus or train transport from St Leonards.
