Nepean Hospital became a teaching hospital and part of the Western Clinical School in the early 1990s. In 2006 the Nepean Clinical School became a separate clinical school of the University of Sydney. The school caters for medical and postgraduate research students. Most of the teaching is centred at Nepean Hospital. Blacktown, Mt Druitt, Auburn, Hawkesbury, Blue Mountains and Lithgow are smaller district general hospitals that participate in clinical teaching. The school has close links with general practise.
The school is situated at Nepean Hospital in Penrith, at the foot of the beautiful Blue Mountains. Frequent commuter and suburban trains link the University (Redfern Station) with Nepean Hospital (Kingswood Station - 55 minutes from the centre of Sydney), while the M4 Motorway provides a motor link between the various teaching sites. Low cost live-in accommodation is available for students at Nepean.
The school is well supported by the local community through the Nepean Medical Research Foundation.
Nepean Hospital is the newest major teaching hospital of the University of Sydney. It is a major referral facility and provides clinical services in most medical disciplines and sub-specialities to the people of Penrith, Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains. Many referrals come from western NSW. There are professorial appointments in Medicine, Surgery, Psychiatry, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Haematology, Critical Care and Nursing. In line with an increase in teaching and research, academic positions and facilities are expanding.
