The Royal Prince Alfred Hospital is the main teaching hospital of the Central Clinical School. The clinical services of this hospital are part of the Sydney South Western Area Health Service, and the Clinical School takes full advantage of these resources for student teaching.
The Central Clinical School has the largest number of academic and clinical academic staff of any clinical school. There are a large number of basic and clinical research centres, with a wide variety of opportunities for graduate students to join in the on-going research programs. Canterbury Hospital is a large district hospital within the Central Clinical School, and has undergone a major rebuilding program which includes modern teaching facilities.
Other associate hospitals include Balmain Hospital with strong Geriatric and General Practice Departments, Rozelle Hospital (Psychiatry Unit) and Sydney Eye Hospital. The Masonic and Strathfield Private Hospitals provide additional opportunities for clinical training. There are three divisions of General Practice with a strong academic presence attached to the Central Clinical School.
Royal Prince Alfred Hospital was opened in 1882 as the campus teaching hospital for the University of Sydney. It has grown from its original 146 beds to a complex of 850 beds including King George V Hospital for Women and Babies. It is situated immediately adjacent to the University, 4 km from the centre of Sydney. It serves not only as a major teaching hospital and referral centre for NSW, but also as a community hospital.
Royal Prince Alfred Hospital provides a full range of general services with clinical departments in every discipline of medicine and surgery, as well as obstetrics and gynaecology and paediatrics. Many medical innovations have been developed at RPAH and it remains at the leading edge of developments in clinical practice. In addition, there are strong links with community health through Departments of Geriatrics and General Practice. There is a strong history of medical research at RPAH. The large number of basic and clinical research institutes on the campus, including the Centenary Institute for Cancer Medicine and Cell Biology, the Heart Research Institute, the Woolcock Institute of Respiratory Research, and the Endocrine, Haematology and Neuroscience Institutes, provide opportunities for research projects for the combined MBBS/PhD degree and for elective periods. There are also close links with pre- and para-clinical Disciplines on the University campus. Currently there are approximately 100 postgraduate students in the hospital.
Medical student and postgraduate teaching has been a major focus at RPAH since its inception and is actively supported by a large group of highly experienced and committed medical teachers. A number of innovations in teaching has recently been developed. A new Clinical Education Centre for student and resident education has been completed with special areas for teaching clinical problem solving. The recently renovated Scott Skirving lecture theatre and the Kerry Packer Education Centre provide excellent large group lecture facilities for student learning. The hospital has an excellent medical library with on-line computer access for students and residents. In addition, the University Medical Library is adjacent to the hospital in the Bosch Building.
Clinical training at RPAH provides the opportunity for students to participate in this tradition of excellence in clinical care, education and research.
