Emergency Medicine is a challenging and exciting specialty that brings together a vast range of medical knowledge and clinical skills, which emergency physicians employ in the daily assessment and treatment of patients presenting for emergency care. This knowledge base crosses all ages, from paediatric through to geriatic and is inclusive of special populations such as pregnant and/or newborn patients. The dynamic and rapidly changing clinical environment of emergency medicine is challenging yet also very satisfying to the practicing clinicians, who are every day saving “life and limb” of the patients in their care.

Emergency medicine forms the basic foundations of practice for doctors. The discipline has developed a Core Curriculum in Emergency Medicine that will give the student the necessary tools to undertake safe supervised clinical practice in an emergency department. In addition the student is given a foundation upon which they can build during their early years of clinical practice.

The Discipline of Emergency Medicine is very fortunate to be composed of dedicated Emergency Physicians who represent all Clinical Schools and Hospitals within the Sydney Medical School group. These same Emergency Physicians have all made significant contributions to the development and teaching of the Core Curriculum in Emergency Medicine to students in their respective emergency departments. It is through their commitment and enthusiasm toward teaching, and their passion to advance the specialty of Emergency Medicine through research and other academic pursuits that the Discipline of Emergency Medicine continues to go from strength to strength within the Sydney Medical School.

It has is my great privilege to be the inaugural head of the Discipline of Emergency Medicine and facilitator of student education in Emergency Medicine.
