Established in 1997, the Broken Hill University Department of Rural Health (BHUDRH) is one of seven University Departments of Rural Health set up and funded by the Commonwealth Government to deal with the rural health workforce crisis in Australia.
The BHUDRH is a multi-professional department of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Sydney and has staff from various disciplines including medicine, nursing, public health, Aboriginal and allied health. It is situated in Corrindah Court on the grounds of Broken Hill Base Hospital and maintains a small educational development and administrative unit on the University of Sydney main campus.
The BHUDRH aims to contribute to the improved recruitment and maintenance of health professionals in remote and rural Australia and to provide leadership by generating and disseminating knowledge that advances rural health practices.
This is achieved by offering accessible and flexible educational and vocational training programs of high quality and relevance, by conducting research to improve rural health practice and to engage effectively in regional, governmental, professional and community consultations and initiatives.
The BHUDRH is focused on:
- facilitating entry of rural residents to medicine and health science courses
- making tertiary health education more accessible to rural based health professionals
- developing courses that prepare health professionals for rural practice
- promoting a positive attitude to rural lifestyle and health practice among medical and health science students
- promoting and supporting rural teachers and teaching
- undertaking research to improve the health of rural residents

BHUDRH research interests and projects include:
- Health Effects of Lead and Evaluation of the Broken Hill Environmental Lead Program
- Development and evaluation of health service delivery systems in rural and remote NSW
- Health issues in Rural Communities
- Remote Area Nursing Practice
