Office of Research and Research Training

The Office of Research and Research Training was established in 2008 to better support Sydney Medical School in its quest to provide leadership in translating research outcomes into better health for all. It brings together the resources required to support and develop our world class researchers and the means to provide the research training required to create the next generation of research scientists.

The Office advises the Dean on research matters and is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to enhance the Medical School's research capacity in health and medical research across the University. The Office also provides advice and administrative support to researchers.

The tenets of the Medical School research strategy are:

  • To support research-led teaching in all Schools.
  • To support core facilities at key sites, such as the EMU, Sydney Bioinformatics, SUPAMAC, tissue and data banks, and encourage the expansion of their service across the Medical School.
  • To strengthen mutually beneficial linkages with research institutes.
  • To ensure proper focus on viable and productive research groups throughout the Medical School by regular reviews of available research support mechanisms.
  • To ensure mentoring and networking for ECRs and new appointees and isolated academics to increase their effectiveness.
  • To benchmark the Medical School’s research performance and use this to guide renewal of its strategy into the future.
  • To focus internal funds for research support on PGR students, ECRs, postdocs and new staff (below level E), paying particular attention to productivity relative to opportunity.
  • To invest in attracting and retaining postgraduate students, and particularly initiatives to encourage more clinicians to undertake postgraduate research.
  • To identify core competencies in research training and implement measures to ensure that all students (Medical Program and PFRs) achieve these competencies.
